Dr Marios Zertalis

Dr Marios Zertalis is a licensed Interventional and Diagnostic Radiologist in Cyprus and the United Kingdom. He is currently based at Aretaeio Private Hospital and Bank of Cyprus Oncology Center in Nicosia, Cyprus and is part of the General Healthcare System (GHS/ΓεΣΥ). He is highly skilled and experienced in performing a wide range of minimally invasive, urgent and elective procedures across a broad spectrum of medical and surgical specialties. He consults patients in clinic and he is responsible for the pre and post procedural management of his patients.

His expertise within Diagnostic Radiology, includes the interpretation of modern medical imaging such as Xray, ultrasound (US), computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance (MRI) with a specialist interest in vascular, gastrointestinal, urogenital, and emergency radiology as well as in the early diagnosis, staging and follow-up of patients with cancer.

Dr Zertalis graduated in 2011 from the University of Nottingham Medical School and was awarded a First-Class degree in Biomedical Science (BMedSci) and a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery degree (MBBS) with Honours.

During his Junior Doctor training in London, he was awarded with Distinction a Master’s degree in Evidence Based Healthcare (MSc) from University College London (UCL). He then undertook a 6-year specialty programme in Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology in the West Midlands Deanery and obtained full fellowship of the Royal College of Radiologists (FRCR) in 2018.

He was appointed as a Consultant Interventional Radiologist by the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust (UK) in 2020 and successfully completed the European Board of Interventional Radiology (EBIR) examination in 2021. Dr Zertalis has performed more than 2500 interventional radiology procedures.

He is a passionate and driven educationalist reflected in his appointment as a lecturer and clinical associate at the University of Nicosia Medical School where he is responsible for the teaching, training and development of medical students in diagnostic and interventional radiology. In 2012 he was awarded a Certificate of Merit for Outstanding Contribution to Teaching by the South Thames London Deanery.

Dr Zertalis is a member of the British Society of Interventional Radiology (BSIR) and of the Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology Society of Europe (CIRSE). He has presented and published research at international level.

Dr Zertalis participates and leads multidisciplinary meetings (MDTs) where complex cases are discussed between different specialties aiming at an evidence-based, decision making process when considering the best medical and surgical management for a particular patient.

For instance, when a patient presents with suspected renal cancer, the individual case, image and biopsy (histology) findings are discussed at an MDT meeting between the Interventional Radiologist (Dr Zertalis), the Urologist (surgeon), Oncologist (medical doctor) and histopathologist. The team of specialists then decides the best possible treatment options for that particular patient.

Additional experience and responsibilities include an active role in research, auditing of practice to ensure high quality standards are met, as well as the development and implementation of new procedures and services aiming at improving patient satisfaction and experience.
